2015 Round-up

30th December 2015

Broadcasters choose SIS LIVE as critical connectivity provider. 2015 was a momentous year for SIS LIVE, with our critical media connectivity skills seeing us established as the broadcasters’ partner of choice, when uninterrupted coverage is vital.

From the General Election to the Rugby World Cup, our reliability and expertise over fibre, satellite and microwave showed SIS LIVE has the infrastructure and proficiency to deliver.

Sport was a key element of our service in 2015 and SIS LIVE’s comprehensive connectivity infrastructure encompassing our teleports in Milton Keynes and MediaCityUK, proved key to consistently resilient coverage.

Rugby World Cup

SIS LIVE’s rapidly growing fibre network was extended to cover all 13 stadia for this autumn’s Rugby World Cup.

The competition may have ended in disappointment for the host nations – but SIS LIVE’s role as connectivity provider for the live action from all 48 matches, as well as all connectivity services for host broadcaster ITV, was a resounding success.

The final was enjoyed by an estimated audience of 120 million, with the tournament’s viewing figures including a record TV audience of 25 million in Japan to watch the match against Samoa, and 11.6 million viewers for England v Wales on ITV.

Football – Premier League and Euro Qualifiers

This football season has seen us deliver continued connectivity to Premier League football, with fibre connectivity at every top flight ground. We covered a number of Euro Qualifiers for ITV Sport, including England’s tie with Estonia at Wembley and the trip to Lithuania. We also connected a number of other matches including Scotland v Poland and Wales v Andorra.

The Jump

As Europe’s largest supplier of satellite uplinks, SIS LIVE is also recognised for the excellence of its equipment and engineers. One of the many broadcasts to ultilise this expertise was celebrity winter sports show The Jump. SIS LIVE worked with CTV Outside Broadcasts and TwoFour to provide uplink facilities from the challenging venue of the Austrian slopes. Our dual antenna satellite uplink vehicle sent back live coverage from series 2 of the eight day competition, with celebrities including Phil Tufnell, Joey Essex and Jodie Kidd taking part in dangerous winter sports including slalom, bobsleigh, the skeleton and the jump.

General Election

Away from sport, one of the biggest news events of the year was the General Election. In May, SIS LIVE, deployed 70 uplink vehicles around the UK, for the General Election where the coverage went without a hitch.

SIS LIVE’s clients – including the BBC, Sky News, ITV, ITN and STV – utilised our uplink facilities to ensure their audiences missed nothing during one of the most dramatic election nights in memory.

Worldwide interest in the result meant overseas broadcasters were also vying for satellite space, but SIS LIVE’s permanently leased, dedicated satellite capacity meant our clients’ satellite connectivity was guaranteed.

Indian Prime Minister Visit

There was much interest in the visit of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and on 13th November we provided CTV OB with dual antenna SIS 47 for his appearance at Wembley Stadium. The next day, we also had SIS 68 at Albert Embankment with the feed delivered to TV9 in India.

Satellite Internet and Streaming Services

We significantly up-scaled our streaming capability and improved our satellite network speed for internet services. It meant we could offer speeds of around 11 megabits per second, more than doubling the previous average speed – making SIS LIVE’s satellite based internet among the fastest on the market.

The flexibility of our service meant we also provided robust connectivity solutions for corporate clients seeking live multi-platform coverage of ad hoc events with maximum audience reach.

SIS LIVE’s satellite connectivity for live events is second to none. The satellite internet services are regularly called upon by broadcasters covering on-the-move sporting events, such as the Tour de France, as well as headline-making music extravaganzas.

Customers include European Tour Productions, which produce and distribute TV golf coverage, as well as ITV Sport, Channel 4, and the producers of high profile music and cultural events.

Cunard’s 175th Anniversary

Another event watched round the world, thanks to SIS LIVE’s connectivity, was Cunard Cruise Line’s spectacular 175th anniversary celebrations on the River Mersey in May. The company’s popular three-strong fleet of cruise-liners made for spectacular viewing as they sailed together up the River Mersey to salute Liverpool, its base from 1840 to 1967.

SIS LIVE provided three SNG trucks to collect feeds and facilitate satellite links to global broadcasters, and streamed footage to the crowds watching on large screens at the city’s docks and the nearby Liverpool Echo Arena. It also facilitated a live webcast via our Network Operations Centre (NOC) in Milton Keynes that was hosted on Cunard’s website.

London Symphony Orchestra

Our streaming and encoding expertise was also used to film and host a live high definition (HD) stream of a concert by the London Symphony Orchestra and two of Kazakhstan’s most famous musicians. The concert, held at a grade one listed former church in London, was watched live online by music fans worldwide.

Jessie J – McDonald’s “24 Gifts of Joy”

We used the same skills to live stream a Jessie J gig on a moving open-topped bus in central London for McDonald’s “24 Gifts of Joy” campaign. Footage from 21 cameras – located on the bus with Jessie J, along the pavements en route and on an overhead helicopter – were mixed live on the bus before being relayed to fans watching online.

Satellite Product Range

SIS LIVE design and manufacture a market leading range of satellite products and we showcased our most recent developments at the key global industry exhibitions throughout 2015, including CABSAT, NAB and IBC. SIS LIVE has had a successful year with hardware sales and has been selling into broadcast, military, security and emergency services markets throughout the world. Our global network of resellers is growing and we are continuing to innovate, supplying bespoke, cutting-edge satellite products for our clients.

World Darts Championship

As we come to the end of 2015, SIS LIVE has extended its venue connectivity portfolio with its coverage of the William Hill World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace from December 14th to January 3rd. We have put fibre links into “Ally Pally” and will provide main vision and reverse vision on fibre as well as SNG back-up during 23 days of non-stop action on Sky Sports.

During 2016, SIS LIVE plans to further build upon its unique offering as the only company which can provide diverse routings across three technologies, assuring against coverage interruptions. We will continue to evolve as the diverse connectivity partner for critical media content which broadcasters turn to when it matters.
