In 2011, SIS LIVE provided broadcast integration services for NewTek to create the first HD Live Production vehicle ever made in a compact SUV. The custom built vehicle was christened the MINI LiveMan, a 3D Storm project, and unveiled at the 2011 Sportel Conference in Monaco, where it was viewed by none other than Prince Albert II. From Sportel it started its tour through Europe visiting all the major industry trade shows throughout 2011/2012. This MINI Countryman car features the new 3Play 425 replay system and the TriCaster 450 Extreme, a 14-channel, HD/SD portable live production switcher with multi-track recording technology. The MINI LiveMan also features, mounted on its roof, SIS LIVE’s award-winning uPod® satellite uplink system, which includes an integrated iDirect modem and rechargeable PAG battery packs. uPod IP is a totally self contained, integrated and compact IP uplink system, that works seamlessly with any satellite capacity, providing a satellite broadband IP link wherever and whenever it’s needed.
Franck Lafage, 3D STORM director says “The uPod that SIS LIVE provided for the MINI LiveMan is incredibly easy to use. Professionals who have seen the MINI LiveMan have been very impressed by the efficiency and the connection speed of the uPod. Thanks to this partnership with SIS LIVE the MINI LiveMan is a stateof- the-art, fully operational and compact production solution.” The vehicle itself and all the hardware were supplied by 3D STORM, exclusive distributor of NewTek products in the EMEA, and SIS LIVE supplied the uPod system and handled the systems design and integration.
The SIS LIVE engineering team completed the project in less than two weeks at their Milton Keynes workshop, fitting a 3Play 425 system, a TriCaster 450 Extreme, a NewTek keyboard, 2 x JVC Pro 24” LCD monitors, 2 x JVC Cameras and various other equipment, as well as mounting the uPod on to the roof.
SIS LIVE designated an experienced project manager, Joe Moderate, to liaise directly with NewTek. He says “The main challenges we faced were the short timescale and lack of available space inside the vehicle. We worked closely with the client to select the right compact technology to meet requirements, and then install it in the most ergonomic way. For example, we had to balance the requested monitor resolution with the limited space we had to work with - it was quite an achievement to fit 2 x 24 inch monitors into the boot of a mini.”
Once the MINI Liveman hit the road, SIS LIVE were only a phone call away to provide support. During the tour NewTek replaced the TriCaster prototype unit initially integrated which had been loaded with the uPod management software (UMS) with a production unit which had not. SIS LIVE was able to load the uPod software onto the system remotely, which made the upgrade easy.
The MINI LiveMan is a one of a kind concept-car that goes beyond the previously integrated MINI, combining the latest and most advanced systems and technologies that NewTek and SIS LIVE have developed. 3D STORM and SIS LIVE pushed the limits further making it a fully operational production vehicle that is actually used for live events production.
Franck Lafage says “We were delighted to have the opportunity to work on the MINI LiveMan concept with SIS LIVE and put our trust in them for the system integration. Their expertise and know-how made it possible to have the concept-car up and ready in no time. This partnership was essential to this adventure.”
